A staycation has always been a great option for taking some time off and unwinding without having to get on a plane or break the bank. The concept has now become more prevalent with stay-at-home orders in place in many states. It is especially hard to have your home as an oasis since now home is work, home is a restaurant, and home is school.
Too often travel enthusiasts, like myself, neglect unique places right in front of them and overlook experiences close to home. Staycations are wonderful opportunities to put your wanderlust spirit to work right where you live, and appreciate your local surroundings. No matter where you live, there are people who travel to your city/state from all over the world for vacation to enjoy what you may take for granted. So, stay put for your vacation days and embrace the hype.
Here are a few things you can do to enjoy that pandemic-related staycation: go to the beach, book a relaxing treatment at a spa, try a new local restaurant, go to an adventure park, hike or bike the trails, visit a museum or botanical garden, kayak, take a food tour, visit a winery, book a room at a luxury hotel, camp out in the backyard or at local campsite, have a picnic, participate in an outdoor treasure hunt, visit the zoo, check out your local theater, host a game night, go golfing, light some candles and put on some music, read a book, or my favorite, fly a kite! As you can see, the list is endless.
And, just like a real vacation, you have to plan for fun in order to make your staycation successful. Start by setting a reasonable, realistic budget. Set some money aside for activities, eating out, and/or paying for a splurge or two. But the key to having the best staycation ever has nothing to do with the activities you choose, but with your own attitude and commitment to making it a time of fun and relaxation. Give yourself permission to kick back and enjoy the moment. Laugh, talk and create memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. This is your time…..make the most of it!
