Finding Discounted Flights

We all know that if the flight is too expensive, we are likely going to keep putting the trip off. I’ve seen it happen time and time again, and I've done it myself! For most trips, airfare is the most expensive part of the trip. While prices for transatlantic flights have gone down in recent years, and especially during this pandemic, they can still put a sizeable dent in any your budget.

Whether you’re a budget solo traveler or a family looking to vacation abroad, finding a cheap flight deal can make or break your trip. And yet every day, airlines have thousands of amazing deals — from mistakenly published fares, to special promotions, to slashing prices, to competing with other airlines. Cheap fares are available and they can make your dream trip a reality — if you know where to look.

Below are the steps I take to find the cheapest airfare possible every time I fly (unless it's a vacation package deal). If you follow them, you won't be the person on the flight who paid the most for their ticket! To help you get started in finding a cheap flight, here are some tips:

  1. Sign up for Frequent Flier Programs

  2. Be Flexible with Your Dates

  3. Be Flexible with Your Destinations

  4. Fly Budget Carriers

  5. Don’t Always Fly Direct

  6. Join a Cheap Flight Mailing List (i.e. Skyscanner, Scott's Cheap Flights, etc.)

  7. Compare Search Engines

  8. Use Points and Miles

  9. Take Advantage of Student Discounts

  10. Mix and Match Airlines

  11. Search Ticket Prices as One Person

  12. Book Early (But Not Too Early)

Finding a cheap flight is all about being flexible and creative. It may take some effort, but it is so worth it. However, don’t waste hours and hours hunting for a cheap flight. And remember, people who wait to book are people who end up spending the most money!
