Hotel Tipping Etiquette

Since we're in the season of giving, I wanted to share a bit of information I hope you can use as you travel through life. Ever wondered if you should leave a tip for housekeeping at your hotel? Well, I used to wonder that too, so let me help you understand its significance and how appropriate (and sometimes necessary) it is.

After many years of traveling and observing how hard most of them work and go out of their way to make sure your stay is pleasant, it became a no-brainer. We always tip the server at a restaurant, so why not do the same for all those who provide service to us. Besides, it always pays to be generous to the helpful people who take care of you, whether it's a housekeeper who goes above and beyond or a hairdresser who is extra good to your locks.

In the U.S., it is general courtesy to tip housekeeping at your hotel, along with most other people who perform a service for guests, including the concierge and bellman. General housekeeper tipping etiquette is a few dollars per night, alongside a note letting the cleaning staff know that the money is for them. The note is important because it let's them know you were intentional in blessing them and that it wasn't that you just forgot you left money in the room. Also, it keeps them from tracking you down to let you know you left money (I've had that happen to me).

In addition, when I'm traveling abroad (especially in poorer countries), I usually leave my brand new shower shoes behind. I've discovered those flip flops may be the best pair of shoes someone in their family get, and they only cost me $1. I also leave any local currency money instead of exchanging it back at the airport. Next time you're traveling abroad or shopping for souvenirs, think about your hotel staff and how you may bless them with the smallest gesture.

We are here to help each other along life's journey, so let's do that wherever we find ourselves in life!
